1945, Berlin. The war is almost over. American forces are closing in from the west; the Russians from the east. Beneath the gardens of the New Reich Chancellery, Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun prepare for the inevitable.
But Hitler has no intention of dying.
He stages his suicide, disappears, and escapes to Switzerland, where millions in stolen Nazi gold await him. Left behind in the Führerbunker is the one thing he could not bear to abandon: Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring—the painting Hitler believes he truly loves.
Lieutenant John Marlboro, a Polish Jew who became an American citizen and now serves in military intelligence, discovers a notebook containing Hitler’s secret code name and a way to contact him. With the war ending and Hitler believed dead, Marlboro sees an opportunity no one else can.
He will use the painting as bait.
Marlboro secretly transports Girl with a Pearl Earring out of Berlin and sets a trap designed to lure Hitler back from hiding. But bringing the Führer out of Switzerland is only half the mission. Marlboro intends to make sure Hitler never escapes again.
As deception collides with obsession, a hunt for one of history’s most notorious fugitives becomes a deadly game of art, revenge, and survival.
The Art Thief is a story of war, hate, deception, love, and revenge—because some art is worth killing for.
